Meet Iuliana: From labourer to assistant site manager

Worker success stories and employers who recognise and nurture talent need to be celebrated and so today I introduce you to Iuliana.

Iuliana began working for Vistry Group at their South Oxhey development in November 2021 as a welfare labourer and she now finds herself being trained as an assistant site manager with a bright future ahead of her. On one of my recent site visits I had the pleasure of sitting down with Iuliana and asking her about her journey.

What did you do before you got into construction?
“Before I got into construction I worked as a house keeper in a hotel. It was quite different to what I am doing now but at that time it was my only option.”

What challenges have you faced since starting on site?
“Everything was new for me and like any experience it was challenging at first but my curiosity and passion kept me motivated. When I first started at Countryside Partnerships (now Vistry) almost three years ago I met several excellent managers who helped me to evolve from a cleaner to the trainee assistant site manager I am today. By giving my best effort and with their trust and support I developed my skills and grew professionally.”

What do you like about working for Vistry?
“Vistry has made me feel like part of a family. I identify with their values and believe Vistry is where I belong”

Ambitions – where do you hope to be in 4 to 5 years time?
“In the next 4 to 5 years I aim to become a site manager and continue my professional development in the construction industry. I aim to learn as much as possible about regulation and standards”

What advice do you have for anyone who is starting where you started in 2021?
“My advice to anyone starting in a similar positions is to be open to learning and seek help from experienced colleagues. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and always look for ways to improve your skills. Stay committed, work hard and keep a positive attitude even when things get tough”

Iuliana’s story of career development is one of many at Vistry Group. They have built an excellent reputation as a company who recognise a good work ethic and an employer who will provide opportunities to those who demonstrate potential. The team at South Oxhey deserve credit and recognition for the work they are doing and we will also do our best to encourage others with ambitions like Iuliana to fulfil their potential and make the most of opportunities when they present themselves.

Iuliana has asked us to thank Liam D’Unienville, Pavel Vassiljev, Ian Jarvis, Aziz Messaoudi and all the other managers who have helped and supported her along the way and continue to do so today.

Good luck Iuliana!
